Turley secures approval for redevelopment of CAFRE Loughry Campus

Planning approval has been granted by the Mid-Ulster District Council for the comprehensive redevelopment of Loughry Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE).

We provided expert Planning and Strategic Communications services to CAFRE throughout the application process. Gregory Architects acted as the project architect on the development, with Hood McGowan Kirk leading as the project managers.

This redevelopment will rejuvenate the existing facilities, reinforcing Loughry’s position as a leading centre for food technology and education. The redevelopment extends to over 15,000 sq m and the buildings on completion aim to achieve both BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and Passivhaus Premium; the latter a target achieved by only one commercial building in Northern Ireland to date.

The approved redevelopment includes the demolition of outdated buildings and the construction of state-of-the-art facilities. Key features of the project include a new Science Building, a Packaging and Robotics building, a Student Hub, enhanced staff facilities, and modern student residential accommodation.

The redevelopment also encompasses significant improvements to the campus’s infrastructure, including the reconfiguration of car parks, provision of cycle parking, and the installation of a ground source heat pump system to enhance the campus’s sustainability credentials.

The planning approval marks a pivotal step forward in delivering upgraded and modern facilities at Loughry Campus, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of students and staff. The new quadrant-style layout, with green spaces and modern buildings, will replace the older structures, offering an aesthetically pleasing and functional environment conducive to learning and innovation.

Associate Director, Planning, Andrew Heasley said:

“The unanimous approval by the council underscores the importance of this development for the future of food technology education in Northern Ireland. We worked closely with CAFRE and local stakeholders to ensure that the project respects the unique character of the site while providing modern facilities that will serve the needs of the community for years to come.”

Senior Consultant, Strategic Communications, Michael Jardine added:

“This approval is a significant milestone in the transformation of Loughry Campus. The redevelopment will not only enhance the educational experience for students but also contribute to the local economy and community. We are proud to be part of this project that aligns with sustainable development principles and preserves the rich heritage of the site.”

The project has been carefully designed to integrate with the campus’s existing landscape and heritage features. With the redevelopment set to commence shortly, CAFRE is poised to continue its legacy of excellence in food education and technology with facilities that are truly fit for the future.

The Loughry Campus redevelopment reflects CAFRE’s commitment to supporting the agri-food industry and our expertise in guiding complex projects through the planning process.

It is anticipated that construction works will commence in summer 2025 with a completion date targeted for 2031.
