Bristol: ambitions and challenges for the city
As the Bristol Housing Festival commences their fourth expo, our Bristol team reflect on and respond to some of the key themes, challenges and ambitions for housing that are being discussed and presented this year – such as modular housing and Bristol’s bid for the Climate Smart Cities Challenge [1].
Bristol’s popularity as a city for work, life and play is growing and its housing need is not being met – particularly the need for affordable homes. Whilst there are challenges posed that slow delivery, such as the constrained nature of some brownfield sites which are a focus for long term, large scale regeneration projects, there are also many exciting opportunities across the city. Whether it be repurposing empty retail space or taking a new approach all together, as we have seen with ZedPods who used Bristol City Council’s air rights over an existing car park to deliver affordable homes, opportunities can be unlocked by harnessing the right investment and innovation.
Our work across the city in recent years has given us first-hand experience of the rise in modular housing construction and how smart cities can have a hugely positive impact. We have had the opportunity to work with ZedPods, on their Hope Rise development; and BoKlok, on the Brook project, who first showcased their innovative approach to affordable housing delivery at previous Bristol Housing Festival events. The Housing Festival inspires new ways of thinking and pioneering technology that directly translates into tangible, scalable solutions for the city.
