My work anniversary in our company’s 40th year - Hannah Tweedie, Associate Director, Heritage & Townscape

During our 40th year, we are highlighting the experience and insights of co-owners who are also celebrating their milestone work anniversaries.

In 2023, Turley is marking our 40th year. We are an employee-owned business. This makes us distinctive because each employee is a co-owner, with a voice and share in our success. We are invested in each other and in the communities in which we work.

What inspired you to join Turley?

I moved to Turley having had several years’ experience in archaeological consultancy, and was keen to further develop my experience working with a wider range of assets. I love working in a team with so many others who share my enthusiasm for the historic environment. We each have our own particular areas of interest and experience.

What are the highlights of your role?  What do you particularly enjoy?

I love the wide variety of types and age of heritage assets that I get to advise in relation to, everything ranging from prehistoric archaeological remains, Georgian gardens and designed landscapes, railway stations, and even 1970s brutalist architecture. I get great fulfilment when I am able to successfully advocate for and manage change which allows the significance of heritage assets and historic townscapes to be sustained and enhanced.

How has your role changed over the time you have been with Turley?

I’ve shaped my role so that I’ve been able to both learn and develop my experience working with historic townscapes and lots of different building types, as well as advising on the kinds of assets I was already familiar with - such as archaeological assets, and historic gardens. During my time at Turley, I’ve had the opportunity to work across all jurisdictions of the UK and in the Republic of Ireland. I’ve also enjoyed supporting the company as a whole, sharing my previous experience advising on green energy projects, such as solar schemes.

What has kept you at Turley?  What makes Turley a special place to work?

I love the unusual opportunities that I get thanks to the distributed leadership model by which Turley is organised – this gives us all the opportunity to contribute to our company in areas which might usually be considered outside the normal focus for your role. I have had the opportunity to contribute to diversity and inclusion initiatives within the company through our ‘Embrace’ group, and have been using some of my experiences from outside of work to help consider and shape how we work to create a workplace which is welcoming to all, in particular thinking about neurodiversity.
