The Knowledge Campus: R&D, industry and innovation

The UK has a long history in developing exceptional knowledge campuses, be it science parks, innovation districts or health research hubs.

The growth of, and focus on knowledge and innovation has been accelerated in recent years, and even further by the events of 2020. With the UK’s commitment to increasing investment in R&D to 2.4% of GDP by 2027 and a range of new funding opportunities through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), such development is at the forefront of many regions’ ambitions. The release of regional Economic Recovery Plans and Industrial Strategies throughout 2020 have demonstrated innovation, health and research are at the heart of future development plans.

We work across the UK and Ireland on a wide range of knowledge campus developments including health, private-sector and education-led schemes. This includes but is not limited to science parks, innovation districts and buildings, medical research hubs, automotive research hubs and university technical hubs and research facilities. Our track record gives us a unique insight into the opportunities and challenges presented by such development across our regions.

We are well placed to support our clients, applying our knowledge and skills from project conception and identification of delivery partners, to Government representations, competitive site bidding, planning application and discharging conditions.

Our full service offer means we can collectively tackle complex development challenges and support our clients in developing an enhanced scheme to best match local need and reflect policy aspirations. A number of our recent private-sector and education-led knowledge schemes have included specialist input from our Strategic Communications, Economics, EIA and Sustainability and ESG services, amongst others.
