Managing planning risk and effective engagement to generate significant support
Our role
- Turley secured full planning permission for the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital to be developed in Smethwick. The permission covers the construction of a state-of-the-art, 10-storey, 670 bed hospital, a fully enclosed winter garden, associated car parking and a series of public realm improvements.
- We provided multiple services in support of the planning application including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and both public and political engagement.
- We co-ordinated and led extensive engagement with key council officers and other statutory stakeholders to achieve overwhelming support for the project and to overcome a series of technical issues around design, flooding and highway topics.
- An extensive public consultation process managed by our Strategic Communications team contributed to an innovative and patient-focussed design for the new hospital through nine public exhibition events.
- Ongoing role progressing the discharge of planning conditions and regularising minor variations, to demonstrate lawful implementation.
Results
- Incorporating 15 operating theatres, the new hospital is expected to serve up to 200,000 patients annually.
- Its new A&E facility will replace emergency care facilities provided at City Hospital, and Sandwell General Hospital A&E will become an Urgent Care Centre.
