Repurposing a historic building to meet modern office requirements
Our role
- Majestic is a grade II listed building which first opened as a cinema during the 1920s.
- Following an extensive refurbishment, a fire broke out in 2014 causing widespread internal damage.
- A new approach to the redevelopment of the building was required to provide a viable scheme that brought the prominent building back into use.
- We undertook detailed pre-application discussions with Leeds City Council, including a presentation to the Plans Panel and Leeds Civic Trust. Our Strategic Communications team led a public consultation exercise which secured both public and political support for the scheme and helped to secure prompt consents.
Results
- Our Planning, Heritage & Townscape, Sustainability and Strategic Communications teams secured planning and listed building consent for the transformation of the landmark Majestic building.
- The approved scheme will provide a mixed-use, primarily office-led development with ground and lower ground floor leisure uses, including restaurants and bars.
- Channel 4 is expected to move into the Majestic in the second half of 2020.
