Turley supports international packaging group on new manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland

Turley is providing expert Planning, Strategic Communications and Economics services for Ardagh Metal Packaging’s (AMP) proposed new state-of-the-art £140 million beverage can manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland.

The new plant would reflect the global demand for infinitely recyclable packaging solutions. Located near Belfast, it would service the growing needs of AMP’s beverage customers in Ireland, the UK and Europe.

Ahead of submitting a major planning application to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council next year, we will be engaging with the community and stakeholders via a consultation website and public webinar sessions with members of the project team available to explain the proposals. Further information will be issued early next year in relation to all community consultation activities.

This initiative is part of a multi-billion dollar investment programme by AMP involving the construction of new, infinitely recyclable, metal packaging capacity in Europe, North America and Brazil. Metal cans are one of the most recycled drinks package in the world, contributing to a circular economy and the sustainability requirements of AMP customers and consumers.

Commenting, Oliver Graham, CEO of AMP, said:

“This exciting project is an important part of AMP’s global investment programme. We are delighted to be investing in Northern Ireland supporting our clients’ sustainability needs and further reducing our carbon footprint by locating capacity closer to our end customers.”

Commenting David Spratt, CEO of AMP Europe, said:

“We plan to have the new state of the art plant operational during 2023 and we expect to commence recruitment in 2022.” He also added that “This investment is supported by key AMP customers and will have capacity for further expansion to service additional growth in customer demand.”

Angela Wiggam, Director, Planning at Turley commented:

“We are delighted to be supporting AMP as they plan this significant investment into Northern Ireland and look forward to working closely with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and other key stakeholders as part of the planning process in the coming weeks and months.”

John Davison, Director, Strategic Communications at Turley added:

“We are excited to embark on the formal pre-application community consultation for what is a major project for the Borough and for manufacturing in Northern Ireland. We will be promoting the community consultation early in the New Year and will be inviting feedback from local residents, business and other interest groups ahead of submitting a planning application later next year.”
