Birmingham City Council resolves to approve redevelopment of Smallbrook Queensway buildings
Turley has helped secure approval for proposals to redevelop the Smallbrook Queensway buildings (also known as the Ringway Centre) in Birmingham.
The proposals will bring about major regeneration of a highly accessible site near to Birmingham New Street Station. The approval will enable the delivery of up to 1,750 new homes, as part of a residential-led mixed-use development. It also includes ground floor retail and leisure space together with significant enhancements to local public realm and the provision of new high quality pedestrian connections.
James Shimwell, Head of Residential Development at CEG, said:
“The Committee’s decision enables significant investment into Birmingham. It will mean we can deliver up to 1,750 much-needed new homes at one of the city’s most sustainable central locations.
“Our proposals will transform the gateway to Southside - creating safer public places and significantly improving the connectivity for pedestrians between New Street station, China Town, and the emerging development proposals for Smithfield. Our proposed new public spaces and pedestrian routes will revitalise the area by attracting new visitors and by boosting local businesses.”
Following more than three years of detailed assessment and technical design work to support the planning application, CEG’s project consultant team, led by Turley, worked collaboratively with Birmingham City Council (BCC) officers to deliver proposals for a mixed-use, vibrant and sustainable development that will help act as the catalyst for wider investment in this part of the city centre.
Mat Jones, Senior Director, added:
“The proposals approved by Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee will support the delivery of transformative regeneration of the city centre in accordance with the city’s own ambitious plans. It has been a pleasure to work conscientiously and collaboratively with our client, with officers, and with a wide range of stakeholders over a number of years to bring forward proposals that reflect the aspirations of the city council.
“The approved development represents the most effective use of a sustainable and redundant site to provide new homes and a mix of other uses that contribute to the vitality and vibrancy of the city. The approval also reflects the confidence of the city to look forward while ensuring that development is delivered of the highest density quality. The proposals have been designed to respect the local context, to recognise local needs, and to achieve sustainable development that aligns with Birmingham City Council’s Net Zero goals.
“Turley provided expert Planning, EIA, Strategic Communications, Economics and Sustainability services to support the application. Following the committee’s decision, our team will continue to work closely with the city council to ensure that the detailed proposals for the site can be delivered comprehensively to the benefit of the local area.
We look forward to the next stages of this process and the opportunity to support the city’s ongoing 21st century renaissance in accordance with its own bold plans.”
