Co-design consultation report published following public engagement on the regeneration of Westage, Drogheda

Following the early public co-design consultation on the regeneration of the Westgate area in Drogheda, led by our Strategic Communications and Planning teams, Louth County Council has published a comprehensive report outlining insights.

To view the consultation report please visit www.louthcoco.ie/ or the dedicated project website at www.westgatevision.ie. Members of the public can also request a copy of the consultation report by emailing contact@westgatevision.ie or by calling the Freephone consultation hotline: 1800-010101.

The consultation report forms part of the regeneration plan for Westgate. The initial co-design consultation phase saw exceptional numbers complete the online survey, contributing their ideas and detailing their aspirations for Westgate.

The report details the insights received from consultation with the public and key stakeholders and how these will help shape the design proposals which will be out for public consultation later this year.

The project represents the first stage of the Westgate Vision, launched by Louth County Council in 2018, which is a targeted planning response aimed at channelling investment into this core area.

This co-design process was part of our brief to prepare the proposals which the council will use as part of an application for funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.

This current stage of Westgate Vision streetscape masterplan project has been funded under the same URDF scheme, which is provided to support and encourage proposals for sustainable urban development or regeneration, as set out in Project Ireland 2040.

Speaking about the consultation Seamus Donohoe, Director, said:

“We are delighted to bring our co-design services and expertise to bear on this project. This project has people and place at its heart, and the insights gathered through public engagement by our strategic communications team are helping to shape proposals and discussion within our multi-disciplinary design team.”

Thomas McEvoy, Director of Services, Louth County Council said:

“Louth County Council are delighted that so many members of community in Drogheda have engaged with this project and took the opportunity to have their say on improvements they would like to see in the streetscape and other public realm improvements they believe could support recovery in this area of the town.

“The consultation report comprehensively details the insights our team have gained from the survey, webinar, workshops and many stakeholder meetings and we want to take this opportunity to thank the public for being so involved in this project. The contributions are helping to shape the design proposals which are currently being worked on ahead of submission for planning consent later this year for approval and we are looking forward to bringing the proposals to the public for comment ahead of that submission.

“The design proposals will form a high-quality plan for the Westgate area, focusing on improving public spaces and acting as a catalyst for positive regeneration and supporting development in the town centre.”
