Raising the bar for healthy development

The NHS has set a new standard for ‘healthy development’ and what this should look like in practice. Our experience supports these conclusions; we believe it is becoming increasingly important that new communities respond to our changing climate and social requirements.

Launched in 2015, the purpose of the NHS England’s Healthy New Towns Programme has been to create healthier and better connected communities. Ten large-scale residential developments across the UK were selected to deliver the programme and explore the ‘how-to’ of healthy placemaking.

The lessons learned from the Healthy New Towns Programme have now been published [1]. This NHS publication is designed to be a toolkit for stakeholders and recommends ten principles for healthy place-making.

We have identified the most important recommendations from the Healthy New Towns Programme report for the design and development stage, available in the below PDF. We have picked out nine recommendations for developers which will increase the quality of our new communities.
