Turley supports Greene King in securing planning permission for new £40 million state-of-the-art brewery in Bury St Edmunds
On behalf of Greene King, Turley has helped secure planning permission from West Suffolk Council for its new state-of-the-art brewery at Suffolk Business Park in Bury St Edmunds.
We provided expert Planning, Strategic Communications, EIA and Sustainability services, including BREEAM advice, to Greene King. This decision will enable Greene King to proceed with its plan for the new brewery, which underlines the company’s commitment to invest in the future of cask ale and build on its rich heritage within its hometown of Bury St Edmunds, where it has had a presence for over 200 years.
The modern facility will deliver significant benefits in water usage and energy consumption. Moreover, it is also strategically located next to Greene King’s St Edmunds Distribution Centre, which is expected to bring additional synergies.
The decision taken by the council ensures that the new brewery, alongside Greene King’s pubs in the local area, will continue to provide local employment opportunities and maintain its position at the heart of the Bury St Edmunds community and economy.
Greene King’s proposals were shaped by extensive engagement with the local community and stakeholders, with the final plans reflecting shared priorities. Local residents will be updated throughout the construction process, which is expected to begin in mid-2025, with the brewery scheduled to be operational in mid-2027.
Cllr Indy Wijenayaka, Cabinet Member for Growth at West Suffolk Council said:
“We are pleased that Greene King have secured planning permission for a new brewery at Suffolk Business Park in Bury St Edmunds and look forward to working with them as a key player in our local economy. The move allows the brewery to modernise their facilities to ensure that they are more sustainable and more efficient for the future, which aligns with our priority for sustainable growth within the district. Their investment and eagerness to stay in Bury St Edmunds not only ensures the retainment of jobs and a skilled workforce, but also demonstrates West Suffolk is the location for businesses to grow and evolve.”
In parallel, Greene King is preparing to launch a collaborative engagement process to shape the future of the historic Westgate Brewery site. Working closely with neighbours, the Council and its team members to shape the future of the site, Greene King is committed to respecting Westgate’s rich heritage.
