A new garden village for Knowsley
The project
- We were appointed by Knowsley Council to prepare a Village Masterplan and Development Framework as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to guide investment and future development for a new garden village.
- The site straddles both sides of the M62 motorway on the edge of the Merseyside conurbation. It is identified in the adopted local plan as a Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE) to Whiston. Whilst a historic settlement with an attractive core, the majority of Whiston comprises homogenous and lower value housing of relatively poor quality.
- The Garden Village offers the opportunity to provide a sustainable settlement on the edge of and ‘knitting’ into Whiston, broadening the range and quality of housing to meet local needs while also attracting more affluent households into the area to create a more inclusive community. The development will significantly increase the scale and quality of open space and facilities for new and existing residents, and provide a wide range of employment opportunities.
- We advised the client and engaged with the local community and other key stakeholders from the earliest stages of the masterplan.
Contribution to meeting UNSDGs
- This scheme will deliver a new and inclusive sustainable settlement on the edge of Whiston. It will significantly extend the quality and choice of housing within the neighbourhood, introducing more families into the area and broadening the demographic profile to create a more balanced community supporting and maintaining local services and facilities.
- The Garden Village has provided leverage for significant public and private investment into the area, stabilising and re-structuring the local housing market, changing perceptions and inspiring confidence for further investment. It will also provide direct and indirect employment opportunities to reduce poverty.
