Expert Heritage and Landscape advice key to securing consent at appeal on a sensitive site in Hampshire

Our role

• We were appointed to provide early Heritage and Landscape advice to identify the scale of opportunity for residential development and credible advice on how to maximise prospects of securing consent. 
• Site is located at the edge of a settlement in its rural setting, adjoining a recently completed residential development and in close proximity to a conservation area, statutorily listed buildings and non-designated heritage assets.
• Given sensitivities, we provided integrated Heritage, Landscape and Landscape Design services to deliver a high-quality scheme and integrate mitigation measures.

Results

• Informed by our Heritage and Landscape expertise, we worked with the client/team to shape the scheme, drawing inspirations from local building traditions and settlement character.
• Close working between the team, we developed a landscape design and strategy that responded to local landscape character, provided an appropriate setting for the new homes, delivered ecological improvements and an appropriate transition to the nearby conservation area.
• At appeal, the Inspector concluded that ‘the appeal scheme would result in a well-designed place.’
• The Inspector agreed with our credible case-making on heritage and landscape impacts.
• Scheme will deliver 20 new homes in an area of acute housing need as well as a high-quality new area of public open space.
