Planning permission granted for Abbey Street development

Acting on behalf of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and their strategic development partner Queensberry, Turley has secured planning permission for the Abbey Street development site in Nuneaton.

We provided Planning, EIA, Heritage & Townscape and Economics services for the project which is part of the Transforming Nuneaton programme.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and Queensberry can now move to the next stage of this exciting project, with construction of the hotel due to start late summer.

The consent also provides outline planning permission for the rest of the development, creating town centre living accommodation, food hall, retail units, leisure, cinema and car parking.

In addition to the new building developments, the site will be landscaped and include a public plaza area to accommodate events.

Cllr Kristofer Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council commented:

“This is fabulous news and exciting to know that we can now proceed with phase one, building the Hotel. With the feedback we collected from our local residents, businesses and stakeholders, we now have a great set of plans in place for this new development.

“Under new management, Nuneaton and Bedworth is now open for businesses! It shows the commitment to investing in our town centre to return it to its former glory, and delivering our plans of vision, ambition and aspiration.

“Combining several uses, the scheme will provide an exciting draw for visitors and boost the town centre economy. The creation of a fun, social space will hopefully create an alluring atmosphere that people will enjoy for many years to come.”

The Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) provided Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council with funding from the Government’s Getting Building Fund (GBF) towards the development. This follows earlier investment from Warwickshire County Council which supported the purchase of the Co-Op building, with a £1.5m contribution.

Sean Farnell, board director at the CWLEP, said:

“This is part of the wider Transforming Nuneaton initiative which has received an allocation from the Getting Building Fund and it is really beginning to take shape now.

“The scheme is an important part of the CWLEP’s Strategic Reset Framework to encourage enterprise and innovation and lay the foundations for a strong economy in our area as we move forward post-Covid.”

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Leader of Warwickshire County Council commented:

“Transforming Nuneaton is an outstanding example of what we are looking to achieve through our place-shaping programme.  It will create an environment that is not only better for residents but also conducive to business, will stimulate the economy and create a town centre that will be attractive to inward investment. I’m delighted to see further progress towards that ambition being made.”
