Implementing Nationally Significant Energy Infrastructure at Port Talbot Steelworks
Our role
- Turley was instructed to discharge the requirements associated with the Port Talbot Steelworks Generating Station Order in February 2018, following development consent being granted in 2015. This work was required to ensure a lawful start on site in a very short timescale.
- Provided Planning, Design and Landscape services from a number of Turley offices. Work included extensive discussions regarding implementation, timescales, design and layout. Our input was vital in balancing the competing needs of the development’s function and aesthetic appearance.
- Complex challenges to move the project forward to meet the client programme were overcome through effective cross-service and cross-office working. This informed the development of a very strong rapport with contacts at Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. The strength of these relationships has been essential in ensuring on-going and genuine open discussions in a collaborative arrangement (supported by an overarching Planning Performance Agreement) with the council.
Results
- Development lawfully commenced on the site in 2018, with the first buildings now completed.
- Turley input ensured positive outcomes to complex negotiations, including the detailed design, landscape, remediation and verification, drainage, and ensuring a viable staged delivery of development that accords fully with the operational requirements of Tata Steel.
- Delivery of this scheme will secure substantial investment in the strategically important site. It will improve and grow operational capacity at the Steelworks, one of the largest employers in the region.
- The successful implementation of a nationally significant infrastructure project at the Steelworks will deliver environmental, social and economic benefits at the site and in the wider region.
