Sir Andrew Gilbart

With great regret and sadness we learn of the passing of Sir Andrew Gilbart.

Andrew Gilbart

Andrew, formerly of Kings Chambers, was a long time friend of the practice and worked with us on many planning cases over the country for 20 years from the 1980s on.  Many of us were schooled by Andrew on the art of writing and giving evidence.  Always fair, positive and an encourager Andrew made the difference in leading teams and winning cases.

When Andrew moved to a position as Circuit Judge and then Honorary Recorder of Manchester we kept in touch and enjoyed his company and catch ups.

Andrew was strategic seeing the big picture and analytic with an eye for the detail.  He taught us about thinking.  He tested witnesses thoroughly on both sides with a respectful rigour, unfailing courtesy and supportive sense of humour.  We had serious fun.

Andrew was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2013 which was a place well suited to him and his skills where he made a series of key planning judgments which are referenced in proceedings today.

We are privileged to have known and worked with Andrew.  The Turley practice as it is today owes him a great debt for his contribution to our professionalism and business success.  We say thank you.

Our deepest condolences go to Andrew’s family, his wife Paula and children Tom and Ruth.
