Plans approved for significant redevelopment of the Bristol Shopping Quarter

Acting on behalf of Bristol Alliance Limited Partnership (BALP), planning consultancy Turley has secured a resolution to grant outline planning permission for an enhanced retail and leisure offer within Bristol city centre.

Bristol Shopping Quarter

The plans were approved by Bristol City Council’s Development Control Committee.

The 3.48 hectare site, situated opposite Cabot Circus Shopping Centre, will deliver more than 100, 000 sq m of retail, leisure and hospitality facilities and up to 150 homes, through the demolition of existing buildings and the comprehensive redevelopment of land in and around Callowhill Court, Broadmead and The Horsefair. The scheme will also provide additional car parking, improved bus, cycle and pedestrian access and facilities, along with landscaping and public realm works.

The proposals will update a part of the city centre’s main Shopping Quarter that has received only piecemeal upgrades since originally being developed in the 1950s. The proposals represent a fantastic opportunity to provide shopping facilities that modern retailer and leisure operators require, securing significant investment in the city centre – creating in excess of 3, 700 new jobs.

Turley provided planning, socio-economic, sustainability and heritage assessments to support the success of this project.

Commenting on behalf of Turley, Huw Jones said:

"Turley has a strong track record in this area of Bristol, having worked on the planning application for Cabot Circus.”

“Bristol city centre needs to grow and evolve to maintain and strengthen its role within the South West. To do so, there is a pressing need for improved retail and leisure facilities within the city centre. It is exciting to be involved with a project of such magnitude with massive potential for improving the experience of people in Bristol and visitors to the city.”

Phillipa Zieba from BALP said:

“We are delighted that Bristol City Council has supported our plans to regenerate this area of Broadmead. This represents a significant investment in securing the long term future of Bristol city centre’s retail and leisure offer.”
